Gregory Angstadt

Greg’s law practice focuses on environmental litigation and environmental permitting and compliance matters. His experience includes air quality, water quality, hazardous waste, CERCLA and Brownfields. Greg also represents landlords and tenants in real estate leasing disputes.

Before pursuing his legal career, Greg served for 15+ years in various management roles in the water treatment, chemical manufacturing, and environmental services industries. This gives him a true insider’s perspective into the challenges his clients face when they receive a notice of violation, negotiate a settlement, prepare for litigation, and participate in a rulemaking. From his time in-house, Greg learned a variety of lessons that now shape how he approaches similar issues in his legal practice: first, he understands how environmental compliance issues affect everyday business operations; second, he drafts contracts/settlements with the goal of providing enough specificity and enough flexibility to help head off future disputes; and finally, he strives to develop trusting relationships with his clients so that he’s involved in matters as early as possible to offer insights that are as helpful in the planning process as they are in the implementation phase.

Environmental Permitting and Compliance. Greg helps clients apply for, renew and modify permits related to air quality, water quality and hazardous materials transportation and storage. He counsels clients on how to proactively stay in compliance and defends them aggressively in enforcement actions before state and federal regulatory agencies. He has experience in the administrative and judicial appeals process. He has also assisted in preparing for rulemaking hearings before the Colorado Water Quality Commission and has successfully negotiated resolutions to zoning and building code disputes.

Before becoming a lawyer, as Regional Manager for Aries Chemical, Greg provided technical and regulatory support for water and wastewater treatment operations at municipal facilities, oil and gas operations, food processers, and metals forming and mining operations. Earlier, as the Manager of Operations, Environment, Health & Safety for a manufacturer of highly hazardous chemicals, Greg succeeded in obtaining an air quality permit to meet regulatory requirements without creating an undue compliance burden on his company. He has negotiated settlements with regulatory agencies following environmental or safety violations and implemented corrective measures to address compliance issues. His shop-floor experience enables him to quickly grasp the nature of a compliance issue, visualize issues to overcome, define reasonable ways to bring a facility  into compliance, and negotiate with regulators to implement a workable solution. His experience at the Federal Mine Safety and Heath Review Commission enables him to effectively navigate the intricacies of agency deference and the administrative review process.

Environmental Litigation, Research and Support. Greg represents clients in a variety of environmental litigation and litigation-related matters. He is particularly adept at meticulously digging for evidence and examining issues from technological and scientific angles. Recently, he assisted in representing a mine in appealing the terms of its NPDES permit.  He also assisted in representing an oil and gas company in litigation arising from alleged contaminated groundwater due to hydraulic fracking operations. For property cleanup actions under CERCLA, Greg has focused concerted effort toward examining CERCLA liability and defenses, especially in the context of parent companies and subsidiaries. In addition, he has negotiated voluntary clean-up plans and performed property re-development research and due diligence.

Landlord/Tenant Matters and Litigation. Greg represents both landlords and tenants in real estate-related leasing disputes including representing a landlord in a discrimination dispute alleged by the tenant.
