Biography

Jim has been with Ryley Carlock & Applewhite since graduating first in his class from the University of Arizona Law School in 1970. During law school, he served as a law review note editor, received AmJur, International Academy of Trial Lawyers and Insurance Counsel Journal awards for the top performance in a number of classes, was elected to the Order of the Coif, and received the Lester Feezer award.

Jim practices in the areas of commercial and real estate lending and insolvency law, primarily representing institutional lenders. He also has substantial experience acting as primary counsel in resolving issues in complex commercial transactions. Recent examples include the transfer of lake properties and water rights by a municipal corporation, resolution of private and State Land Department ground leases, and a joint venture between a retailer and major oil company. Two of Jim's regular clients are among the oldest (1912 and 1919) Arizona nonprofit corporations.

Jim and his wife Mary Ann, both fourth-generation Arizonans, have three grown children and enjoy traveling to Mexico and Ireland.

Publications

During law school, Jim served as Note Editor of the University of Arizona Law Review.

Speaking Engagements

Jim has lectured at both the University of Arizona and Arizona State University Colleges of Law, as well as the State Bar of Arizona, Robert Morris Associates, BOMA, Credit Data Southwest and other accounting and trade association seminars, on topics including real estate and commercial and real estate lending, bankruptcy, letter of credit, Uniform Commercial Code, mechanic's liens, stop notices and public event ticketing.

Jim is an AV-Preeminent Rated attorney by Martindale-Hubbell.
